Observations

written 5/24/2008 this is about a friend of mine, and the brilliances I see in him.

I like to watch you
moving and smiling with gold in your hair
and eyes like fire: amber and azure.
I like to watch you
when you love people. And in that love,
you tend and take care of them:
speaking slowly, sifting your speech
so you can say just what you mean.
I like to watch you
when you rest, when you sleep,
and the peace and innocence purify your face;
you look like a child.
Although – I’ve never seen a child with a beard.
I like to watch you
when you watch me, except I cannot hold your gaze for long-
I don’t know what secrets my face and eyes are telling you.
They don’t consult me first.
But they do not lie; not to you, never to you.
I like to watch you
when you are with your sister, your little sister.
The one you have taken, though she shares none of your blood.
And you are so gentle with her, that I feel myself stare
and refuse to look away, because what I see
is unique and holy and precious.
