Carnivale

Written 2/23/08 I wrote this at a bible study one night. I had been venting in an entirely different poem, and some of the phrases I used in the other one tickled my mind so I wrote this. It’s not for anyone in particular, just the people that pretend.

A frozen face
contorted-
a grimace meant to insinuate that
you are enjoying yourself.

Purple and gold
and green and
silver:

bright colors to offend
the observing eye
and capture the questing mind.

Gaudy and vulgar,
made worse because it is false.
This face says you feel
one thing
alone,
Shallow as the porcelain veneer
upon your features.

Do you fear its removal
lest we see the truth
written with your
lovely mouth and eyes?
